The Power of Your Creative Imagination
A Picture is Worth a Thousand WordsHave you ever remodeled a room? Planned a vacation? Have you ever applied for a new job, prepared to make a speech, or worried about a difficult conversation in the future? Any activity that requires you to look ahead into the future, or plan ahead all begins with a picture in your mind, or an image. What is Imagery?Beliefs, feelings, attitudes, and ideas are represented and deeply rooted in imagery. Imagery can be thought of initially as pictures in your mind; yet imagery is so much more than simple pictures in your mind. Imagery is a full sensory experience made of thoughts that you can see, feel, hear, taste, and smell. Imagery can be about events that have happened in the past or have yet to happen. Rich in symbols, imagery tells us how we see ourselves, how we see others, and how we plan for the future. Imagery is a window into your inner world—the world of dreams, daydreams, fantasies, and your creative imagination. Imagery is also a reflection of your outer world, the world of self-image and confidence. |
What is Guided Imagery?Guided imagery is a mental thought process that uses sensory information in a natural way. Actors, athletes, and business people all use mental imagery rehearsals to envision successful performances or to set goals. To use this internally driven technique, you simply close your eyes, take a few deep relaxing breaths, and follow a script to imagine your desired goals. Usually the script is read out loud by a trained therapist in person, but an audio recording can also be used. The use of a script is what makes this technique “guided.” With this technique, you have the opportunity to tap into multiple senses and multiple ways of knowing. Your senses will help you feel, on a deep, meaningful level, the self-confidence you’ve always wanted. Using powerful brain scanning technology, scientists have recorded the activity that takes place in the brain when we’re using visualization and guided imagery. We know that when people visualize or imagine using various senses, the parts of their brains involved with those senses become active. What this means is that the body and the brain don’t know the difference between imagined events and real events. The body and the mind are integrally connected. Guided imagery is an opening for a two-way communication process—a conversation, a dialogue. It acts as a vehicle for understanding yourself, as this inner awareness comes to you through inner pictures, words, thoughts, sensations, or feelings. |
